I believe youngsters can easily differentiate between computer games and real life. I remember I felt movies like Kickboxer was cool when I was 13, and it got me interested in martial arts for a while too. But I never got the idea I should go outside and attack someone on the street. I doubt youngsters today are different... the ones committing violent crimes are probably having some major problems with their home lifes. Computer games and movies doesnt have anything to do with it.

What we need is less concerned parents, the 'I know because I'm a parent' argument wont cut it anymore.
Some parents actually do know the best, and some dont. Its impossible to tell when you are young, because you never recognize when they are right and when they are wrong until afterwards.

Ofcorse they can be right, or can they?. I mean unless they have a master in psychology or have studied statistics on the matter they are all speculating.
And you should nenver base ANYTHING on speculations.
You mean how you speculate that all parents are clueless?

I'm only wondering, how the decision making they learn to use within this game may influence the decision making they need to do in RL, especially at the borderline cases of ethical and unethical conduct. In EVE, unethical conduct is frowned upon by many, however at least the same number of people congratulate you to your evilness.
I believe the main difference is that the negative consequences in real life is far greater than the consequences in Eve for being a jackass. So I wouldnt worry about it. Someone who acts too badly in real life ends up with no friends.

I dont believe you learned that from Eve. Either you were already like that as a person before you started playing Eve, or you have become that way for other reasons.

The only way success comes about in real life is by, in some way, being above others.
Some people exploit others, some people were born smarter, some people were born into wealth.
For every person in the world with a good paying job there is another in poverty.
Something being labeled "Unethical" never really stopped people from doing it anyways. Politicians lie, CEOs cheat, its the way of the world.
How people act in an MMOG is a reflection of how they would act in real life if there were nothing to stop them.
I personally, however, will not pirate, gank, steal, or scam in an MMO, and will not do similar things in real life, but the decision to be ethical or unethical must be made by the person in question.
Aristotle once said: "I have gained this by philosophy: that I do without being commanded what others do only from fear of the law. "
I must say, however, that there are many people playing EVE that are ethical, called "care bears" by the unethical.
I can only speak for myself, but I would definently not steal or scam someone in real life even if I could get away with it. Simply because I feel better about myself if I dont.
I have no idea if im good or bad.. I think both of those words mean basicly nothing. Its all relative. ****** was good in some peoples eyes, and so is Bush. I do believe that the world is growing to become a more selfish place though, but all of us doesnt have to be that way.

Do not generalise. There are asshats and good people in the world. It is the same in EvE. Good people are an extinct race though.
I wish I didn't share your views on the latter part of that statement. Unfortunately, it's all too true, I fear.
I think its basicly about what people you attract by acting a certain way. If you are acting selfish, you will attract other selfish people to you. And the other way around. A giving person will spot the selfish ones very fast, and just ignore them.
There are many nice people in the world... you just have to look for them. :)

You cant really even be sure that violance and video gaming has any connection to eachother. It could be any number of things contributing to violence going down, like more police, education or whatever. Right?

I believe you are right here.. I would be surprised otherwise.. and start refering to people as idiots. :)

Your mentally ill teenagers never get the chance to commit school shootings because 1) They don't have access to guns 2) they are too busy committing suicide. World Health Org Suicide Rates.
Contrary to your belief, school shootings are such big news here because of their rarity and shock value. Look at the link I posted earlier. Teen violence is quite low compared to their high points. Also look at Newer data on school violence. I guess those numbers would look huge if they had occurred in a Scandinavian country though, considering the huge population differences.
I have to agree with this. Both finland and sweden have pretty high number of people with depressions and other problems. I do believe that if we had guns commonly available we would have alot more of violance and suicides. And yep, muslims arent liked.
But hey, there is always Prozak... nothing beats being drugged up to handle todays world...
To be honest, its quite worrying how the world develops...
